A Town Behind the Wall

Wuxi, Jiangsu, China

M. James Thompson

This is a continuation of my series, A Town Behind the Wall. The collection focuses on disappearing towns within quickly growing Chinese cities. The towns are being removed to make way for quickly construction Chinese high rise apartment complexes. I am only beginning to learn about the process from an active town to a demolished wasteland, but the faces of the people who still live among the rubble tell a story of loss. I am still working up the courage to attempt to speak with residents of the towns that I visit, but soon I hope to start shooting portraits if anyone is willing to be photographed.

Walls are constructed around these once beautiful towns while they are being transitioned from a neighborhood to construction site. Some residents abandon their homes early while others hold out in hopes that their luck may change. These photographs are the beginning of an evolving collection  from towns that I have been lucky enough to find behind the walls of China.
